Global Competition Review Awards “Matter of the Year”

November 16, 2020

For the fourth consecutive year, S&C’s antitrust team has been recognized with top honors at Global Competition Review’s 2020 GCR Awards, which recognize the best in antitrust enforcement, merger clearance, and cartel defense matters.

The “Matter of the Year” award went to T-Mobile’s $26 billion acquisition of Sprint, which entailed a very substantial divestiture of assets to S&C client DISH Networks. In that $1.4 billion transaction, DISH acquired the Boost prepaid mobile business of Sprint, as well as access to T-Mobile’s wireless network while DISH builds out its own. These assets will enable DISH, which now serves more than 9 million wireless customers, to become the nation’s fourth facilities-based wireless carrier, competing with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. The Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice crafted the large and complicated divestiture to preserve competition in the face of T-Mobile’s acquisition of Sprint.

The antitrust team advising DISH was led by Steve Holley and Brad Smith in New York.

S&C’s antitrust lawyers were previously recognized with “Matter of the Year” awards for their work on the Bayer/Monsanto merger in 2019, the Amazon/Whole Foods merger in 2018 and the Teva/Allergan matter in 2017. S&C’s antitrust practice is ranked “Global Elite” in Global Competition Review’s 2020 GCR 100 rankings.
