Nader Mousavi and Mark Schenkel have been named “Dealmakers of the Year” by The American Lawyer for advising OpenAI on the third phase of its multiyear, multibillion-dollar partnership with Microsoft, which The American Lawyer described as a deal that “has the potential to help shape the future of everything.” This phase of the partnership is focused on accelerating breakthroughs in AI technology, while continuing OpenAI’s mission of democratizing AI and ensuring its safe and ethical deployment.
“We like to think that OpenAI had their pick of who they wanted to handle this,” Nader told The American Lawyer. “The distinguishing factor was that, while no one had done this before, we were the team who had the experience in technology, joint ventures and licensing, as well as the ability to be both creative and commercial. All of those things played out during this deal.”
“We feel very fortunate to play this small part in the development and evolution of such a transformative technology,” Nader said. “We view it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be this involved in something this transformative.”
S&C’s Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property & Technology Transactions practices bring diverse practitioners together, advising clients on cutting-edge issues arising from groundbreaking developments in AI and other types of IP. Nader is Co-Head of both practices and Mark is a partner in the practices.
S&C lawyers have been named “Dealmakers of the Year” by The American Lawyer 28 times in the past 26 years, the most of any law firm.
