On November 7, Joe Neuhaus, head of S&C’s Arbitration Group, moderated a debate at the New York International Arbitration Center’s (NYIAC) event, NYIAC Talks, in New York City. The debate, entitled “This House Believes that Arbitral Tribunals Should Regulate Ethical Conduct in International Arbitration,” presented the arguments pro and con on whether arbitral tribunals should take an active role in regulating the behavior of counsel in arbitration proceedings or should leave that task to counsel’s home-country disciplinary authorities, arbitral institutions or others. The debaters were George A. Bermann, professor at Columbia Law School and Director of Columbia’s Center for International Commercial and Investment Arbitration, Preeti Bhagnani of White & Case LLP, Kiera Gans of DLA Piper and Michael Nolan of Milbank. Rekha Rangachari, Executive Director of the NYIAC, presented opening remarks.
