Two deals on which S&C advised were recognized as “Deal of the Year” at
The Asian Lawyer’s 2019 Asia Legal Awards. S&C client Ant Financial’s Series C Financing won “Private Equity Deal of the Year.” S&C partners
Garth Bray and
Kay Ian Ng in Hong Kong led the successful $14 billion financing, which makes Ant Financial “the world’s largest fintech firm and equips it with enormous resources for expansion,” according to
Bloomberg. The deal had previously been named “
Private Equity Deal of the Year” at the
China Law and Practice Awards 2018.
Takeda Pharmaceutical’s acquisition of Shire, on which
S&C served as U.S. counsel to Takeda, was named “M&A Deal of the Year: North Asia.” This deal vaults Takeda into the top 10 pharmaceutical companies globally by revenue, and is the largest-ever acquisition of a foreign firm by a Japanese company, more than double the previous largest Japanese company acquisition. S&C partners
Keiji Hatano in Tokyo and
Catherine Clarkin in New York acted as counsel for Takeda.
The awards ceremony was held on March 21 in Hong Kong and recognized the region’s landmark deals.
