On August 20, 2021, the Standing Committee of the 13th National People’s Congress passed the Personal Information Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China (“PIPL”). The new law, which is set to go into effect on November 1, 2021, sets forth rules governing the handling of personal information and defines certain individual rights with respect to personal information. PIPL differs significantly from several other comprehensive data protection laws, such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”).
