Wall Street Journal and New York Times Cover S&C Hire of Renata Hesse, Former DOJ Antitrust Head

February 27, 2017

On February 27, the Wall Street Journal published an article on the hire of Renata Hesse as partner at S&C titled “Sullivan & Cromwell Hires Former Justice Department Antitrust Head Renata Hesse as Partner in D.C.” The article notes that, while merger activity is likely to stay strong under a business-friendly Republican administration, the focus will shift from cost-cutting deals to transactions that help companies grow. Renata, who until January was acting assistant attorney general in charge of the antitrust division at the U.S. Department of Justice and who has had particular involvement in major technology and communications deals, is equipped with the expertise to help clients navigate the shifting antitrust landscape. “The need for Renata's skills is only going to grow as companies look for ways to market more efficiently priced, higher-value products in more jurisdictions,” Joe Shenker told the Wall Street Journal. “Renata is one of the most sought-after legal experts coming out of Washington. She has deep knowledge and experience in complex, cross-border matters as well as the intersection of antitrust and intellectual property issues.”

Renata's hiring was also covered by The New York Times, in an article titled “Former Antitrust Chief Joins Sullivan & Cromwell,” in which Joe was quoted as saying, “Renata brings to S.&C. deep and highly relevant government experience, further strengthening our world-class antitrust practice.”
