Rodgin Cohen was quoted in an article looking back at Wachovia's sale to Wells Fargo during the 2008 financial crisis in an April 20 Charlotte Observer article titled “Wells Fargo has its own troubles 10 years after saving Wachovia. Some wonder: What if?” Rodgin commented on the “randomness” of which banks were able to survive as standalone entities as opposed to which ones had to find a merger partner during the crisis. “Had Wachovia been three or four weeks later, maybe even two weeks later, they may have had a government assistance program,” he said.
