Frank Aquila Appears on Fox Business’ Opening Bell

January 28, 2015

On January 28, Mr. Aquila appeared on Fox Business' Opening Bell in a segment titled, “Yahoo spins off Alibaba stake to avoid $16B tax bill,” alongside Suntrust Robinson Humphrey's Robert Peck and Anchor Maria Bartiromo, to discuss Yahoo's spin-off of Alibaba. Making sense of the spin-off, Mr. Aquila explained, “When you sell an asset, you pay a capital gain on it, and [Yahoo has] a very low tax basis since they bought this with a relatively small investment in 2004. By putting it in a separate company, and spinning it off, they're essentially splitting the company so the shareholders of Yahoo are not recognizing any gain, they're just two separate shares of the company.” When asked about Yahoo's future, Mr. Aquila said, “I really think they're going to combine with somebody else, they're going to be acquired or they're going to have to go out and make some pretty significant acquisitions if they're going to be a long-term player. I don't think Yahoo survives as it is today for very much longer.”
