Message From the ChairJune 18, 2020
Recent tragedies remind us that discrimination, prejudice and injustice persist in our nation. Sullivan & Cromwell is committed to helping to address conditions that have led to these unacceptable disparities.
To that end, the S&C community has embarked on a series of expanding efforts.
- Looking inward, we will find new solutions to better diversify our Firm and be more effective allies to diverse groups.
- The Sullivan & Cromwell Foundation—which is funded by our partners, lawyers and staff—has earmarked considerable funds to support U.S. civil rights and legal defense organizations promoting social justice and equality.
- We continue to be heavily engaged in pro bono work to help victims of discrimination and injustice and are continuously seeking more opportunities. Current efforts include pursuing Section 1983 civil rights cases, assisting the Vera Institute with research into alternatives to incarceration, handling class actions for COVID-19 at-risk prisoners, and sending secondees to the Federal Defenders of New York.
- We have partnered with other law firms and clients to leverage our collective resources to effect change. These efforts include successfully lobbying for the repeal of Section 50-a of the New York State Civil Rights Law in order to allow public disclosure of police records relating to police officer misconduct.
As we add our efforts to the collective movement for equity, we believe progress is not only possible, but the only way forward.
