Law360 MVP Awards: Seven Sullivan & Cromwell Partners Named 2020 MVPs

Sullivan & Cromwell partners across a range of practices have been recognized by the Law360 MVP Awards this year, reflecting the Firm’s strength across multiple disciplines. Lawyers selected as MVPs “have distinguished themselves from their peers by securing hard-earned successes in high-stakes litigation, complex global matters and record-breaking deals,” and were selected from more than 900 submissions. During the past 10 years, S&C lawyers have won 60 MVP awards.

Mitch Eitel in Banking

The Managing Partner of our Financial Services Group, Mitch steered clients through the two biggest bank mergers of 2019: SunTrust’s $66 billion merger-of-equals with BB&T, the biggest bank merger since 2004; and First Horizon’s $3.9 billion merger-of-equals with IBERIABANK. This marks Mitch’s second Law360 MVP award for Banking.

Robert Giuffra in Class Actions

Bob spent early 2020 in a three-phase trial before a San Francisco jury, defeating massive damage claims sought by plaintiffs who opted out of Volkswagen’s landmark emissions class action settlements, which Bob negotiated for Volkswagen in 2016. For Goldman Sachs, he won a crucial ruling compelling arbitration in a high-profile employment class action. This is his eighth Law360 MVP award.

Steven Holley in Transportation

As the co-head of our Antitrust Group, Steve works on both transactional and litigation matters. Earlier this year, he secured the dismissal of a multibillion-dollar RICO lawsuit brought by General Motors against client Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. He also is serving as U.S. antitrust counsel to FCA in its pending $50 billion merger with Peugeot owner Groupe PSA. Last year he was named a Law360 MVP in Antitrust.

Matthew Hurd in Life Sciences

A five-time Law360 MVP in Life Sciences, Matt is a longtime advocate for life science innovators. In the past year, he has advised Amgen in its $13.4 billion acquisition of worldwide rights to psoriasis drug OTEZLA® from Celgene and represented Swiss drug maker Novartis in its $9.7 billion acquisition of The Medicines Company.

Scott Miller in M&A

A signature feature of Scott’s practice is his lasting relationships with clients, as demonstrated by his role representing longtime client Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in its pending $50 billion merger with Peugeot. Scott also helped DraftKings in its three-way business combination with SBTech and Diamond Eagle Acquisition, as it went public during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic by using a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC).

S. Eric Wang in Tax

Eric played an essential role as the lead U.S. tax lawyer who helped BP raise $10 billion through an innovative technique involving the issuance of “perpetual bonds,” marking the first time this type of corporate bond had been issued in the United States. He also advised Anheuser-Busch InBev on tax issues that arose in the IPO of its Asia-Pacific subsidiary, Budweiser Brewing Company APAC Limited.
