Karen Seymour Quoted in Law360 Article on FCPA Enforcement Activity

March 6, 2014

Ms. Seymour was quoted in the Law360 article titled, “FCPA Enforcement Won't Slow Anytime Soon, DOJ Says.” The article cited discussions from the ABA White Collar Conference, held in Miami on March 6, during which panelists discussed the foreseen increase in FCPA activity as the U.S. Department of Justice attempts to speed up its investigations by pushing companies to produce documents and complete their fact-finding more quickly. Ms. Seymour remarked that tightening the time frame for investigations to proceed may discourage companies from self-reporting possible issues before they have fully investigated the facts. Ms. Seymour also questioned the Department of Justice's enforcement priorities, in light of the deferred prosecution agreement with Diebold Inc., in which the total amount involved in the bribery scheme was $1.6 million. “This is a wakeup call to all of us and a good reminder for those of us advising companies, particularly in certain areas of the world, about how strictly the department will apply its policies,” she said.
