The Trump administration recently announced several developments in its tariff and trade agenda, including:
- President Trump imposed a 25% tariff on certain advanced computing chips and semiconductor chips;
- The president directed the Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Trade Representative to negotiate trade agreements regarding processed critical minerals and their derivative products, and deferred imposing tariffs on such minerals; and
- The Department of Commerce announced a trade deal with Taiwan whereby the Taiwanese government will invest a minimum of $250 billion into chipmaking in the United States. In exchange, the reciprocal tariff rate on Taiwanese goods will be lowered to a maximum of 15%.
