On July 30, 2024, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation issued a request for information (the “RFI”) about the characteristics of deposits held by insured depository institutions to understand how different types of deposits behave differently in times of stress. The questions included in the RFI cover a range of areas, including data that banks currently collect and report, other data that may help the FDIC in carrying out its responsibilities, and the relationship between particular characteristics of deposits and their impact on both the likelihood of a bank failure and the cost of resolving a failed bank. The request also seeks information to “inform conversations on deposit insurance reform,” which would require an Act of Congress. Responses are due by October 7, 2024.
