Andrei Iancu, Co-Head of S&C’s Intellectual Property and Technology Litigation Group, authored an article for the Stanford Social Innovation Review discussing the role of IP protections as an incentive for human creativity and innovation. The authors note that creators are more likely to invest their time into developing new ideas and technologies when they know their work will be protected. “It’s crucial for government agencies like the USPTO and the Copyright Office to craft thorough and thoughtful policies that safeguard creators and their works from infringing uses of AI without stifling artistic progress or preventing artists from harnessing the beneficial power of this technology.”
The authors also explore the idea of human and artificial intelligence as complementary forces. “AI is not merely mimicking human intelligence but augmenting and extending it in unprecedented ways.” The article was co-authored by David Kappos. Both he and Andrei are former Undersecretaries of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Directors of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
