Carsten Berrar, Managing Partner of S&C’s Frankfurt office, and Senior Associate Peter Klormann, co-authored the “Trends and Developments” chapter of the 2024 Edition of Chambers Corporate M&A Guide: Germany, analyzing recent trends and developments in Germany.
The chapter offers perspective into factors that have been impacting the German M&A market through the past year including the challenging economic environment and high uncertainty among buyers and sellers. Carsten and Peter note that despite a lower level of deal volumes, interest and need for strategic transactions remained undiminished and private equity firms continued face both investment and exit pressure.
The authors also cover regulatory developments seen over the last year in the areas of merger control, FDI screening and first experience with the new EU foreign subsidies regulation. “[T]here is a very large backlog of incomplete German deals awaiting execution from the past two years, which could still make 2024 a busy year for M&A,” Carsten and Peter write.
