Andrei Iancu, former Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, authored the foreword of Cambridge University Press’ “5G and Beyond: Intellectual Property and Competition Policy in the Internet of Things.” In his foreword, “Why Patents Are Critical for Standards-Based Technologies,” Andrei makes the case that patents are more important for technology to be used in standards than in almost any other field.
Addressing the complexity of standard-essential patents, Andrei states: “Patent policy must be carefully balanced to protect the interests of both patent owners who contribute their innovations to a standard, and those who seek to implement those technologies into actual products that are brought to the market.”
The book launch event, at which Andrei spoke, was held on April 15 in Washington, D.C.
