IBA Annual Conference 2016

Ms. Blackmore, Mr. Cohen, Mr. Rockwell and Ms. Simmons participated in panels in the International Bar Association Annual Conference 2016, which took place from September 18 to 23 in Washington, D.C.

On September 20, Mr. Cohen participated in a panel titled “The next financial crisis: will it come, what will cause it and are we prepared?” The panel covered whether legislators and regulators have done enough to prevent the possibility of a future financial crisis similar to that of 2008.

Ms. Simmons also participated in a panel titled “Rocking your (financial) world: FinTech and financial market infrastructure.” The session, which covered FinTech industry developments and their effects on financial markets infrastructure, explored topics such as digital currency, peer-to-peer lending platforms, Blockchain and digital financial supply chain.

On September 21, Mr. Rockwell participated in a panel titled “Public disclosure of payments to governments including indigenous governments and peoples.” The panel covered the recent institution of transparency measures in the extractive sector regarding oil, gas and mining company payments to governments and indigenous peoples.

Ms. Blackmore also spoke on a panel titled “Buying assets abroad: a nightmare?” The panel covered issues related to multijurisdictional cross-border asset transactions.

In addition, several S&C partners participated in meetings and events in connection with the IBA Annual Conference. The Firm hosted a breakfast reception on the rooftop terrace of the Washington, D.C. office for many of the participants. Fourteen S&C partners and more than 235 external guests, representing 40 countries, attended.
