Juan Rodriguez and Axel Beckmerhagen Co-Author Article on Cooperation in EU Competition Breach

September 22, 2011

Mr. Rodriguez and Mr. Beckmerhagen co-authored an article titled, “Why it Pays to Come Clean,” in the September 22 issue of Legal Week. The article discussed the rewards for whistleblowing cartel behavior in the EU, such as the recent April case of Procter & Gamble, Unilever and Henkel. In this case, the companies hid their cost-savings in production of laundry detergent from consumers in order to maintain product price while increasing profits. Mr. Rodriguez and Mr. Beckmerhagen noted, “The case is an example of how perfectly legitimate, and even desirable, co-operation between competitors can go horribly wrong.” The authors highlighted topics of critical importance including the necessity for public disclosure and regulatory cooperation.
