The American Lawyer Features Interview With Nader Mousavi Tracing His Career From Law School to “Big-Firm Dealmaking”Fall 2011
Mr. Mousavi was featured in an interview published in The American Lawyer’s Fall 2011 Intellectual Property special supplement. In an introduction to the interview, which was titled, “Gadget Guy Dials Up a Big Deal,” the publication observed that S&C recruited Mr. Mousavi in May 2010 in part because of his work, while a partner with Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, with S&C lawyers on Silver Lake’s 2009 acquisition of a majority stake in Skype Global from eBay, Inc. As Am Law also noted, Mr. Mousavi represented Silver Lake again in May as lead IP counsel in Microsoft’s $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype – this time as a partner at S&C.
In the interview, Mr. Mousavi discussed his career, from his “winding path from law school to telecom start-up to big-firm dealmaking,” as Am Law put it. Of his risky decision to join a tech start-up after law school, Mr. Mousavi said, “I felt I had a passion for technology, and I thought there was a good chance that I would spend the rest of my career working in that area. It was a unique opportunity to see the industry from the inside.” Equally valuable, he said, was his switch to outside counsel. “From then on,” he said, “I viewed legal issues not only as a trained IP transactional lawyer, but also from a practical, business perspective: Why is this issue important to the client? What is the underlying business objective?” He also discussed his work with Skype, which he said “affirmed what I've learned through earlier experiences: IP is the heart of the value of innovative companies.”
