Sergio Galvis Featured in Latin Lawyer Article

June 10, 2011

Mr. Galvis was extensively quoted in an article titled, “Role Reversal,” in the June 10 issue of Latin Lawyer. The article explored the increasing prominence of Latin American M&A lawyers, a phenomenon that has developed along with the growing number of regional transactions without a U.S. component. The article noted that while there is an uptick of deals carried out under local law, companies continue to hire international firms like Sullivan & Cromwell for their biggest Latin American deals, citing the Firm’s work in LAN-TAM airlines combination as an example. As Mr. Galvis told Latin Lawyer, “We are seeing the relationship between international and Latin American firms get deeper and deeper in transactions.” Pointing to the LAN-TAM deal, he added, “The emergence of sophisticated cross-border Latin American M&As calls for lawyers to step up and provide better value than your typical inbound or outbound deal. Lawyers have to work together really effectively.” With investment flowing into Latin America from around the world and regional companies becoming ever more international in scope, Mr. Galvis said Latin lawyers ought to “think like global lawyers.”
