Rodge Cohen Discusses S&C’s High Global M&A Ranking in Reuters Article

December 17, 2010

Mr. Cohen was quoted in a December 17 Reuters’ story, “S&C’s Breadth Helps Law Firm Climb M&A Ranks,” which notes that S&C climbed five places to reach the #2 spot in Reuters’ 2010 law firm rankings for announced global M&A transactions by value, advising on more than $230 billion worth of deals. Mr. Cohen told Reuters he believes deal activity could pick up next year. “There is an awful lot of pent-up demand. So if things don't go south economically, I can see a pretty decent year in M&A,” he said. The article noted that the firm has been ranked #1 twice over the last five years, including 2008. “Cohen and his team were fighting nearly every major crisis that year,” Reuters observed, “as they advised companies ranging from Lehman Brothers Holdings and American International Group to Barclays PLC and Goldman Sachs Group Inc.”

In the article, Mr. Cohen also discussed handing over day-to-day management responsibilities to Mr. Shenker, who assumed the position of chairman on January 1. Mr. Cohen said Mr. Shenker had especially worked to promote S&C’s international presence, saying, “if you look at our major deals this year, so many of them had an international aspect.” In addition, the article reported that S&C was one of the few Wall Street firms to continue hiring during the financial crisis. “Some people felt that it was necessary to have an impact on the short-term profitability,” Mr. Cohen said, adding that S&C took a longer view.
