Rodge Cohen Quoted in American Banker Article on Liquidity Standards Under Basel III

January 3, 2012

On January 3, Mr. Cohen was quoted in an American Banker article titled, “Basel Focus Shifts From Surcharge to Liquidity Rules,” which focused on the recent drive to create liquidity standards as a part of the international Basel III plan. As explained in the article, during the financial crisis, institutions that were well capitalized still failed due to a lack of liquidity. In 2011, banks and regulators could not reach an agreement on the issue, which is expected to be another major point of debate in 2012. As Mr. Cohen noted, “Clearly the issue will be liquidity. That's always been a sleeper issue. Everybody focused on capital under Basel III, and it's liquidity that is the real major problem.”
