Robert “Bob” Katz was a partner of Sullivan & Cromwell from 1980 to 1988. He rejoined the Firm in 2019, 31 years after joining Goldman, Sachs & Co., to serve as general counsel and a partner/managing director from 1988 through 2000, including service as a member of the Management Committee and the Partnership Committee; as an advisory director through 2005; and as a senior director since 2006.
Mr. Katz is a trustee emeritus and presidential councillor at Cornell University and a member of the Board of Fellows of Weill Cornell Medical College. He has previously served as a member and a vice chair of the Board of Trustees of Cornell, including chair of its Committee on Board Composition and Governance, and a member of the Executive Committee and various other committees, as well as national chair of the Annual Fund and a vice chair of Cornell Now!.
He is chair emeritus and a member of the Executive Committee of the USC Shoah Foundation; chair emeritus of the Horace Mann School; a former chair of Achilles International; a trustee of the Goldman Sachs Foundation, the Goldman Sachs Charitable Gift Fund and the Goldman Sachs Philanthropy Fund; a member of the Council on Foreign Relations; and a trustee emeritus of the Allen-Stevenson School. He is also the former president of the Institute on Judicial Administration and a former trustee of Prep for Prep.
Mr. Katz earned his B.A. from Cornell in 1969 and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1972. While at HLS, he was awarded the Sears Prize and a Knox Fellowship and served as a member and president of the Harvard Defenders.
