Ricardo Mestres joined Sullivan & Cromwell in 1961. He became a partner of the Firm in 1968, and served as Chairman of the Firm from 1995 to 2000. He is currently a Senior Counsel of the Firm. Mr. Mestres' practice consists principally of advising United States and non-U.S. issuers and their financial advisors in connection with merger and acquisition and corporate restructuring transactions and public offerings and private placements of equity and debt securities. Mr. Mestres is a member of the Firm's Mergers & Acquisitions Group and in that capacity has advised a number of United States companies in connection with their acquisition and disposition programs and their preparation for and responses to unsolicited acquisition proposals. Mr. Mestres is also a member of the Firm's Corporate and Finance Group and has advised a number of U.S. and non-U.S. companies and their investment banking advisors and underwriters in a variety of capital raising transactions.
Mr. Mestres is a member of the American Bar Association; New York State Bar Association; New York City Bar Association (former member of the Corporation Law, Securities Regulation Law and State Legislation Committees); American Law Institute; and Council on Foreign Relations. Mr. Mestres has served as a trustee of The Unitarian Church of All Souls in New York City and of Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, where he was President of the Board of Trustees from 1993 until 1999. He is on the board of the Goldman Sachs Philanthropy Fund.
