Charles Dowling is the Managing Partner of Sullivan & Cromwell’s Estates and Personal Group. Mr. Dowling joined the Firm in 1993 and became a partner in 2002. He represents high net worth individuals and families in many aspects of their personal and business affairs, including sophisticated estate and tax planning, the structuring of private business and investment vehicles, trust and estate administration, charitable planning, and a broad range of personal legal matters. Mr. Dowling serves as an advisor to or trustee of many large family trusts, charitable foundations and family offices.
Mr. Dowling was the recipient of The Burton Awards for Legal Achievement “Distinguished Writing Award” in 2017 for his co-authorship of an article in The M&A Lawyer, titled “M&A Implications of Corporate Governance and Succession Planning for Family-Controlled Businesses.” He is a contributing author of the treatise International Estate Planning, published by Matthew Bender (2nd ed. 1999).
He has served on the Committee on Trusts, Estates and Surrogate’s Courts of the New York City Bar Association and is a member of The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. He is co-chair of the New York Presbyterian Hospital Planned Giving Advisory Council and a trustee of the William Nelson Cromwell Foundation.
