Aharon has more than thirteen years in senior government policy positions, serving as senior tax counsel at the Committee on Ways and Means and senior adviser to the Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy at the Department of the Treasury. Aharon also has eight years of private sector tax and litigation experience, most recently working for current Treasury Assistant Secretary of Tax Policy Ken Kies at the Federal Policy Group, and earlier in his career, at large law firms in New York City and Washington, D.C. He has worked on complex high profile tax controversy cases, including representing President Trump, as well as tax transactional and planning matters.
Aharon played a key part in the enactment of numerous tax laws from 2007 to 2020, including the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. He has very wide experience across the Tax Code, including international, corporate, pass-throughs, cost recovery, insurance, executive compensation, health care, education, energy, excise taxes, tax-exempt bonds and housing.
In addition, Aharon has extensive ERISA policy experience, including fiduciary standards and oversight and administration of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. Aharon had an influential role in the enactment of numerous pension laws, including the 2014 Multiemployer Pension Reform Act, SECURE and SECURE 2.0. He has deep expertise on PBGC intervention in underfunded single and multiemployer pension plans and withdrawal liability, especially involving events such as credit downgrades, business restructuring and corporate reorganizations.
Aharon participated in numerous oversight matters, including IRS enforcement with regards to nonprofit organizations.
His articles and observations on tax, pensions, international law and sovereignty have been published by top media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, UK Tax Journal, Boston Globe, The Hill, Federalist Society, Washington Examiner, Bloomberg Tax, American Mind, City Journal and Hoover Institution Digest.
