What made you decide to join S&C in New York?
I had three criteria in my search. First, because I had worked only in D.C., I wanted to work where I’d be exposed to all different kinds of “New York legal market” matters and not be pigeonholed into one or two discrete areas of practice. Second, because of my ties there, I also wanted a firm with a significant presence in Washington. And finally, I wanted to work with the absolute best litigators. Thus, S&C was an easy choice.
What was it like clerking for the Supreme Court?
One thing that’s intimidating about clerking on the Supreme Court is that, in even the highest profile cases, it’s just you, your co-clerks and the justice working on it. You learn how to deal with that responsibility, how to summon the necessary confidence and balance it with humility. Those lessons will serve me well in earning our clients’ trust.
How has clerking prepared you for your work at S&C?
Clerking provides a glimpse into how judges decide cases in real time. I was immensely privileged to have that experience with three different judges, each of whom brought their own unique perspectives and approaches. I learned so many lessons on life and lawyering from each of them—too many to recount here
