Melissa Sawyer, Co-Head of S&C’s global M&A Group, spoke with The New York Times about the approval environment for M&A transactions, as strong deal activity continues despite market volatility and geopolitical pressures.
She observed a widening gap between federal and state approaches to antitrust review, with state-level actions introducing additional complexity and delay for certain deals. “While people have a lot of confidence about what’s going to happen at D.O.J. and F.T.C., I think the politicization of antitrust at the state level has become problematic and slowed down a number of transactions,” she said.
