Morgan Ratner, Partner in S&C’s Litigation Group, appeared on an episode of the Original Jurisdiction podcast with David Lat. David introduced Morgan as somebody with demonstrated ability to offer “clear, concise, consistently insightful explanations of very complex cases,” and “definitely one to watch” in the Supreme Court bar. The two discussed tips for succeeding in law school and practice, elements of great legal writing, and the key cases and trends for the Supreme Court term that began in October 2024.
Morgan offered a key piece of advice for balancing school, work and personal life that has helped her put things into perspective. “Do things your way, not the way you are supposed to do them,” she said. “Don’t put your life on hold for your job. There will be ways to pursue your legal career through the crazy seasons and the quiet seasons, and it is hard to predict which period is going to be which.”
Morgan also offered a preview of themes for the Supreme Court term, noting that there is a bit of uncertainty for what is to come. In particular, she discussed two cases with high profiles in popular culture—United States v. Skrmetti and Garland v. VanDerstok. She also walked through some of the other doctrinal flashpoints in the coming term.
