Morgan Ratner, Partner in S&C’s Litigation Group, was identified by Law360 as one of 12 oral advocates who are poised to be the leaders of the Supreme Court bar’s next generation, having argued before the Supreme Court nine times in her career. Morgan discussed the importance of seeking out mentors, finding an argument style that works for you, and balancing work life with personal life.
When asked about her argument style, she noted the importance of remaining fair. “A lot of people get so confident in their own position that they can’t see the strength of the other side. And if you don't appreciate the force of the other side’s arguments, then you can’t understand the most effective way to neutralize them,” she said. “I am very much a ‘cooler,’ … [s]ome people are “heaters” at arguments – they bring the temperature up. Some people are coolers – they try to explain to the court [that] everything is just going to be fine if you side with them … I think of my style as conversational.”
