Olivier de Vilmorin, S&C's Head of European M&A, spoke with Law.com International about the European M&A market and the outlook for dealmaking for the remainder of 2023. Although the global M&A market was down 44 percent, S&C topped legal advisor rankings for the first quarter of 2023 and jumped eight places from last year's rankings.
The short term outlook for dealmaking has been complicated by various factors, including rising interest rates, but Olivier expects that the market will pick back up at the end of the year. “[F]inancial sponsors are holding a record amount that they need to deploy. Investor activism is also causing ripples. So, everyone is expecting things to pick up,” he said. In particular, he highlighted healthcare, energy and tech as sectors to watch in the coming months.
