Tokio Marine Holdings and Berkshire Hathaway entered into a strategic partnership, including a $1.8 billion equity investment in Tokio Marine from Berkshire Hathaway’s primary reinsurance entity, National Indemnity Company. In addition, the two companies have agreed to a whole account quota share reinsurance arrangement for a portion of Tokio Marine’s global insurance portfolio and to collaborate on strategic investment and transaction opportunities.
Tokio Marine is a multinational insurance holding company headquartered in Tokyo. Founded in 1879, it is Japan’s oldest and largest property and casualty insurance group.
Berkshire Hathaway, though its subsidiary National Indemnity Company and other reinsurance affiliates, operates one of the largest reinsurance groups in the world.
