A Brazilian subsidiary of Carrefour S.A. has reached an agreement with Advent International and Walmart Inc. to acquire Grupo BIG Brasil—Brazil’s third-largest food retailer—for approximately $1.3 billion. The transaction is expected to close in 2022.
Carrefour is one of the world’s leading food retailers, operating a network of around 13,000 stores in more than 30 countries. The transaction strengthens Carrefour’s presence in Brazil, its second-largest market. Together Carrefour and Grupo BIG will operate 876 stores in Brazil. S&C advised Carrefour regarding New York-law governed agreements in connection with the transaction.
