On March 28, Jay Clayton, Senior Policy Advisor and Of Counsel to S&C and former Chair of the SEC, spoke at Barclays’ inaugural Global ESG Conference. Jay joined Katharine Braddick, Group Head of Strategic Policy at Barclays, to discuss how companies can meaningfully engage with shareholders on sustainability-related matters.
“Meaningful shareholder-management and engagement on sustainability requires a deep understanding of the company’s place in its industry and that industry’s place in our highly integrated and dynamic global economy,” Jay said. “Top down, generic metrics may provide some insight or a jumping off point for discussion, but rarely would they provide a basis for effective sustainability-oriented decision making.”
